Frequently Asked Questions

How long has Hekima Place been operating?
Hekima Place was incorporated in June 2005 and registered as a 501c3 non-profit organization in the State of Pennsylvania.  We welcomed the first 10 girls into our home in Kenya in August 2005.

Where is Hekima Place located?
From 2005 to November 2010, Hekima operated on rented property on the Karen Blixen Estate. In June 2009, the U. S. Board of Directors purchased 10 acres of land in Kiserian at the southern end of the Rift Valley, and a permanent, family-like home is under construction with plans to openened in December 2010.

How many girls live at Hekima Place?
The goal is to keep the number of girls in residence around 60 in order to maintain a family setting rather than an institutional home.

What are the ages of the girls?
Girls range in age from infant to late teens.

What is the religious affiliation of Hekima Place?
The girls at Hekima Place are raised in the faith of their parents.  While initial support for the home came from members of Catholic parishes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Hekima Place is now supported by many individuals and churches of different denominations worldwide.

Where do the girls go to school?
The girls attend primary and secondary community schools with children from the local towns.  Evenings and weekends, they receive additional support and tutoring from staff and volunteers at Hekima Place.

How does Hekima Place impact the AIDS crisis in Kenya?
Statistics show that girls in Africa who receive an elementary and secondary education dramatically reduce their chances of contracting AIDS. Hekima Place gives them access to that education.  In addition, by welcoming the girls into a loving home environment, Hekima Place removes the girls from the dangers of living in the slums or on the streets, where their futures would be at serious risk.
