Accommodations
Hekima Place is located on a beautiful compound in a safe neighborhood in Kiserian, Kenya, about 16 miles west of Nairobi (a 40 minute drive). Shopping can also be done in the town of Karen. Volunteers will have to arrange their own means for transportation if there is a desire to venture into Nairobi or other areas. Volunteers stay in a guest house on the Hekima Place property. Each volunteer has a single bed (twin or bunk) and may room with one to three others. There is a full bathroom with sink, flush toilet, bathtub and shower. There is also a kitchen with a small refrigerator and a two burner, gas cook-top stove. There is a fully automatic washing machine available for volunteer use. It should be used wisely and sparingly.
Volunteers are responsible for their own housekeeping while in residence and are expected to make their bed, sweep, wash dishes and empty trash receptacles in a timely manner to avoid infestations of ants or other pests.
Volunteers typically prepare their own breakfast and lunch They are encouraged to eat dinner with the girls. Dinners with the girls are included in the $10.00 per day accommodation fee. Volunteers are also free to prepare their own dinners if they prefer.
Please note that this $10.00 per day is our request from volunteers to offset food, water and electrical expenses. Payment can be settled with Kate Fletcher or our accountant Sophie.
Transportation and Communications
Hekima Place provides transport to pick up volunteers from the airport. You will be picked up either by a Hekima Place employee in one of our vehicles, or we may send a trusted taxi. We do ask that you arrange your own return transport to the airport.
While at Hekima Place there are a variety of communication methods. A computer is available for volunteer use. There are also cyber cafes in Karen which are open Monday through Saturday. Cell phones are widely used and are available at vendors for very reasonable prices. Volunteers who are staying for long periods may wish to have a cell phone. We also have two cell phones available for volunteers use for the cost of the air time used.
